They see <a href=\"https:\/\/80000hours.org\/problem-profiles\/artificial-intelligence\/\">potential dangers from the technology<\/a> on the horizon.<\/p>\n<p>Take the White House. This week, President Joe Biden announced a sweeping new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/10\/30\/fact-sheet-president-biden-issues-executive-order-on-safe-secure-and-trustworthy-artificial-intelligence\/\">executive order<\/a> to respond to the risks potentially posed by advanced AI systems, including risks to national security.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read our career review on <a href=\"https:\/\/80000hours.org\/career-reviews\/ai-policy-and-strategy\/\">AI governance and coordination<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The new order includes the following<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A requirement for AI labs working on the most powerful models to share information about safety tests and training plans<\/li>\n<li>Direction to the National Institute of Standards and Technology to create standards for red teaming and assessing the safety of powerful new AI models<\/li>\n<li>Efforts to reduce the risk of AI-related biological threats and to mitigate cybersecurity vulnerabilities<\/li>\n<li>Provisions on fraud, privacy, equity, civil rights, workers&#8217; rights, and international coordination<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Vice President Kamala Harris also announced the creation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/11\/01\/fact-sheet-vice-president-harris-announces-new-u-s-initiatives-to-advance-the-safe-and-responsible-use-of-artificial-intelligence\/\">United States AI Safety Institute<\/a> this week, which will help evaluate and mitigate dangerous capabilities of AI models.<\/p>\n<p>And the US government is making a big push to hire more <a href=\"https:\/\/ai.gov\/\">AI professionals<\/a>. They&#8217;ve extended the deadline for applying to the <a href=\"https:\/\/presidentialinnovationfellows.gov\/apply\/\">Presidential Innovation Fellowship<\/a> in light of this push.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And it&#8217;s not just the US that&#8217;s taking action on AI risks<\/strong>. In the UK, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak convened the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/topical-events\/ai-safety-summit-2023\">AI Safety Summit<\/a> this week to bring together national leaders, AI companies, civil society groups, and researchers to collaborate on managing the risks responsibly.<\/p>\n<p>There already appears to be some real progress from these efforts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Representatives from the US, the UK, the EU, China, Nigeria, Brazil, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and more than a dozen other countries joined a declaration acknowledging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/ai-safety-summit-2023-the-bletchley-declaration\/the-bletchley-declaration-by-countries-attending-the-ai-safety-summit-1-2-november-2023\">the major risks posed by frontier AI models<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Yoshua Bengio, a leading scientist in the field of AI, has been announced as the chair of a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/ai-safety-summit-2023-chairs-statement-state-of-the-science-2-november\/state-of-the-science-report-to-understand-capabilities-and-risks-of-frontier-ai-statement-by-the-chair-2-november-2023\">&#8220;State of the Science&#8221; report<\/a> on the best evidence-based research we have about the risks and capabilities of frontier models.<\/li>\n<li>Ahead of the summit, the UK government announced that seven of the leading companies developing AI have outlined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aisafetysummit.gov.uk\/policy-updates\/#company-policies\">safety policies across nine different areas<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Prominent AI scientists from China, the US, the UK, the EU, and elsewhere signed a statement calling for <a href=\"https:\/\/humancompatible.ai\/?p=4695\">global coordination on AI safety and governance<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are only preliminary steps, and there&#8217;s still a long way to go. A lot more work is needed to drive down the risks from AI.<\/p>\n<p>But these are promising signs that mitigating catastrophic AI risk is tractable.
