This is because it seems possible that the community will grow a great deal, and it includes people who are willing to switch areas to work on whichever issues turn out to be most urgent in the future &#8212; so it&#8217;s robust to changes in priorities.<\/p>\n<p>We realise this may seem self-promotional, since 80,000 Hours is itself an effective altruism organisation. However, if we didn&#8217;t recommend what we ourselves do, then we&#8217;d be contradicting ourselves. We also wouldn&#8217;t want <em>everyone<\/em> to work on this area, since then we&#8217;d only build a community and never do anything. But we think it makes sense to recommend it as one of several high-impact paths you could take.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"what-does-this-path-involve\" class=\"toc-anchor\"><\/span>What does this path involve?<\/h2>\n<p>A key way to contribute to building the effective altruism community is to <a href=\"\/job-board\/building-effective-altruism\/\">work at one of the organisations in the community<\/a>. Many of these organisations have a solid track record, are growing, and have significant funding &#8212; so a big bottleneck is finding staff who are a good fit. An additional staff member can often grow the community by several additional people each year, effectively multiplying their efforts.<\/p>\n<p>These organisations do a variety of work, such as research, fundraising, and providing community infrastructure. The roles let you develop expertise in effective altruism, top global problem areas, and running startup nonprofits. They put you at the heart of the effective altruism and long-term future communities, letting you build a great network there. Many of the organisations also put a lot of emphasis on personal development.<\/p>\n<p>However, bear in mind that these roles require someone who:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Has strong skills that are needed by the organisations, which often require a style of research and reasoning that isn&#8217;t common elsewhere.<\/li>\n<li>Is a good fit with the specific team.<\/li>\n<li>Is deeply engaged in effective altruism. <\/li>\n<li>Excels with relatively little supervision almost immediately (as many organisations are management constrained).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This means if you <em>are<\/em> a good fit for one of these roles, then you probably won&#8217;t be easily replaceable, and taking the role can be very high impact.<\/p>\n<p>It also means that most people <em>are not<\/em> a good fit for most of these roles. Unless you have strong evidence of your aptitude and fit, you shouldn&#8217;t expect to have more than about a 5% chance of landing a specific job. Given that there are usually not many jobs available within these organisations at a given time, you should also plan to apply for jobs in other <a href=\"\/career-reviews\/\">career paths<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are a variety of roles available in effective altruism organisations, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Management, operations, and administration &#8212; e.g. hiring staff, setting strategy, creating internal processes, setting budgets.<\/li>\n<li>Research and advice &#8212; e.g. developing the ideas of effective altruism, writing and talking about them.<\/li>\n<li>Outreach, marketing, and community &#8212; e.g. running social media accounts, marketing content, running promotional accounts, visual design, moderating forums, conducting market research, responding to the media, helping people in the community.<\/li>\n<li>Systems and engineering &#8212; e.g. web engineering, data capture and analysis, web design, creating internal tools.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We&#8217;d like to especially highlight roles in operations management &#8212; there&#8217;s a significant need for them, but these roles are often neglected, perhaps because they&#8217;re seen as less glamorous. Another common assumption is that these roles are easier to enter, which makes them more replaceable. Our view, however, is that operations management jobs are both essential and difficult, and require people to make that the main focus of their career. Read more in our <a href=\"https:\/\/80000hours.org\/articles\/operations-management\/\">full article about operations management<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"panel clearfix \">\n<h3><span id=\"organising-a-local-effective-altruism-group\" class=\"toc-anchor\"><\/span>Organising a local effective altruism group<\/h3>\n<p>One version of this path, or perhaps one step in a longer path, would involve organising an effective altruism local group.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.effectivealtruism.org\/get-involved\/start-an-ea-local-group\/\">Organisers of student and local effective altruism groups<\/a> run events to help people learn about, discuss, and make connections within effective altruism.<\/p>\n<p>This could be an especially good option for students, who have what&#8217;s often a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend a lot of time with other talented people who are interested in making the world a better place, and who still have the flexibility to change paths. There are also opportunities to get paid for this work.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re not a student, look for a local city group, which will have members spanning a wider range of ages. In either case, you can consider <a href=\"https:\/\/resources.eahub.org\/start\/\">starting a group<\/a> if there isn&#8217;t one nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Running a group can also be valuable career capital \u2014 you can practise useful skills like managing volunteers, organising events, and marketing, while also gaining a charitable activity for your resume and making connections within (and learning a lot about) effective altruism. This is especially true if you&#8217;re able to find other great people to work with, and are motivated to make your group successful.<\/p>\n<p>That said, one drawback of pursuing this option full-time (rather than volunteering) is that you may gain less career capital than you would in other options available to you &#8212; in particular if you want to work outside of effective altruism community building later, because the position is harder to use as a credential. However, under the right circumstances it can still be a strong option for career capital (e.g. due to building connections), especially if you want to work within effective altruism later.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"examples-of-people-pursuing-this-path\" class=\"toc-anchor\"><\/span>Examples of people pursuing this path<\/h2>\n<aside class=\"well well-person pull-right clearfix align-center  padding-top-small padding-bottom-small\">\n<p class=\"no-margin-bottom\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-circle well-person__portrait\" height=300 width=300 src=\"https:\/\/80000hours.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/tara-mac-aulay-e1462634969713.jpg\" alt=\"Tara Hedley portrait\"><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"no-margin-top\">Tara Hedley<\/h4>\n<p>As a teenager, Tara applied to study pharmacy, motivated by a desire to help people by improving their health. After learning about effective altruism through 80,000 Hours, she decided to intern at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rationality.org\/\">Center for Applied Rationality<\/a> in Berkeley &#8212; both to have a bigger direct impact and to build career capital. He played a crucial role in ensuring FHI ran smoothly, more than doubled its funding, co-wrote further successful grants, and helped the organisation grow from five to 16 staff. This experience prepared him to be a key player in founding Cambridge&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cser.ac.uk\/\">Centre for the Study of Existential Risk<\/a>, and later, the <a href=\"http:\/\/lcfi.ac.uk\/\">Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/80000hours.org\/2013\/02\/bringing-it-all-together-high-impact-research-management\/\">Read more\u2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<aside class=\"well well-person pull-right clearfix align-center  padding-top-small padding-bottom-small\">\n<p class=\"no-margin-bottom\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-circle well-person__portrait\" height=300 width=300 src=\"https:\/\/80000hours.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Ben-West-e1636736518384.png\" alt=\"Ben West portrait\"><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"no-margin-top\">Ben West<\/h4>\n<p>After spending almost a decade at a large healthcare IT company, Ben founded his own healthcare tech company so that he could earn as much as possible and then donate part of his earnings. Later, Ben realised he could have an even larger impact by growing the effective altruism community. He decided to join the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centreforeffectivealtruism.org\/\">Centre for Effective Altruism<\/a>, where he now uses his technical skills to oversee CEA&#8217;s web products \u2014 making them more useful for people interested in learning about doing the most good.<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<h2><span id=\"how-to-assess-your-fit\" class=\"toc-anchor\"><\/span>How to assess your fit<\/h2>\n<p>Whether you are a good fit to work at an effective altruism organisation depends in large part on the type of role you&#8217;re interested in. However, there are some common characteristics the organisations typically look for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A track record that demonstrates intelligence and an ability to work hard.<\/li>\n<li>Evidence of deep interest in effective altruism &#8212; for some roles, you need to be happy to talk about it for much of the day. This breaks down into a focus on social impact and a scientific mindset, as well as knowledge of the community.<\/li>\n<li>Flexibility and independence &#8212; these organisations are relatively small, so staff need to be happy to work on lots of different projects with less structure.<\/li>\n<li>Several years of experience in a relevant skill &#8212; although this isn&#8217;t a requirement, it seems to be becoming difficult to get most of these jobs without it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"how-to-enter-this-field\" class=\"toc-anchor\"><\/span>How to enter this field<\/h2>\n<p>To enter these roles, you can apply directly to the organisations. Organisations often hire people who are already involved in the community \u2014 both because commitment to and knowledge of the community are requirements for many jobs, and because it&#8217;s easier to evaluate a candidate if you already know their work. So if you want to aim towards these positions, the most important step is to start meeting people in the community, and doing small projects to build your reputation &#8212; e.g. writing on the <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.effectivealtruism.org\/\">Effective Altruism Forum<\/a>, volunteering at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eaglobal.org\/\">EA Global<\/a>, starting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.effectivealtruism.org\/groups\/\">local group<\/a>, or doing freelance consulting for an organisation. We list more advice in our <a href=\"\/career-reviews\/working-at-effective-altruist-organisations\/\">full profile<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, because these positions are scarce, you shouldn&#8217;t count on getting one. This means it&#8217;s important to make sure you&#8217;re acquiring career capital that would be relevant to other paths (e.g. a full-time job or graduate school) at the same time as you&#8217;re building your reputation within effective altruism. It&#8217;s usually not a good idea to commit to this path or build plans that depend on getting one of these jobs before you&#8217;ve gotten an offer.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to get a job that puts you in a better position to enter these roles in the future, then do something that lets you develop a concrete skill that&#8217;s relevant to one of the role types listed above. Well-run tech startups with 10\u2013100 people are often a good place to learn these skills in a similar context. Alternatively, some effective altruism organisations frequently hire people from our other <a href=\"\/career-reviews\/#our-priority-paths\">priority paths<\/a>. Excelling in any of those paths is a great way to better position yourself for a job at an effective altruism organisation, and could be equally or more impactful on its own.<\/p>\n<p>For those interested in organising a local group, you can check if your university or city has a group you can join using <a href=\"https:\/\/eahub.org\/groups\/\">this directory<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/resources.eahub.org\/start\/\">This guide<\/a> explains how to to start a new group as a volunteer, and you can read this great writeup of how the <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.effectivealtruism.org\/posts\/F9E8MwsPLiqSYhXJm\/lessons-from-running-stanford-ea-and-seri\">Stanford group grew<\/a> to be one of the biggest within two years.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;d like to apply for funding to run a group, consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centreforeffectivealtruism.org\/groups-resources-and-support\/#group-organiser-funding\">applying for a grant<\/a> from the Centre for Effective Altruism or the Effective Altruism Infrastructure Fund.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"recommended-organisations\" class=\"toc-anchor\"><\/span>Recommended organisations<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/80000hours.org\/about\/\">80,000 Hours<\/a> \u2014 yes, that&#8217;s us.
